Summer Term 2025

Dear Parents and Carers,
A short half term for us all this time and there is a lot for us to fit in. Please check the dates at the end of this newsletter and get the important ones in your diary!
This is an important time for our Year 6 children as they will be completing their SATs next week. Whatever your stance is on testing in Primary Schools, this is something that we have to do and please be reassured that the children are as prepared as they can be. We are running breakfast clubs from 8:15am for the Y6 children to meet their friends before school, have some breakfast and chat to their friends. We are running relaxation sessions at lunchtimes which are always very popular. Whilst we do want your children to try their best and have the opportunity to demonstrate all their learning and hard work, we have also told them that their best is ALWAYS good enough. It may help parents to know that we have said to get an early night each night as well!!!
Have a lovely weekend

Jack G (4AF) - An Act of Bravery!

We would like to congratulate one of our pupils in 4AF on the bravery they showed whilst helping to save their father's life.
At the start of the Easter holidays, Jack was at home with his Dad who began to suffer from a medical emergency. This would have been a traumatic event for Jack - but he remained calm. He was able to call 999, tell them he needed help and tell them where he lived. Jack then waited by the door for the Ambulance service. Dad was taken to hospital and the paramedics said that if Jack hadn't been there and able to do what he did, it might have been a very different outcome. The paramedics had nothing but the highest praise for Jack, who told them he had learnt all that he knew from a Police visit into school.
These visits from the Emergency services helped to give Jack the confidence to call and act in the calm way he did.
We are very proud of you Jack and we know your parents certainly are too. Well done - a real-life hero!
Year 4 Residential to Whitemoor Lakes
Our Year 4 children had a wonderful time at Whitemoor Lakes on their residential visit this week. The enjoyed archery, kayaking, zipwire, climbing and a disco. Parents - you should be very proud as the children were commended on their behaviour, attitude and willingness to have a go!
Well done children and thank you to all the staff who accompanied the children. Some well earned rest for all this weekend!!
80th Anniversary of VE Day
What a fantastic experience our Y5 pupils from our school had on their trip to Barr Beacon to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day! On Thursday, 8th May, 10 of our students took part in a special event attended by Councillor Anthony Harris (Mayor of Walsall), MP Wendy Morton, members of the Barr Beacon Trust, veterans from the Mercian Regiment, and representatives from the Walsall and Bloxwich branch of the Staffordshire Regiment Association. With Freya's help, the national flag was raised to the national anthem, setting the tone for a memorable day. Our pupils thoroughly enjoyed their experience participating in such a significant occasion. The afternoon concluded with a lovely garden party, games and a memorable experience exploring and sitting in a military jeep! We could not be prouder of our children for their enthusiasm, respect, and engagement throughout the event.

Sun Protection Measures
As Summer approaches, there are likely to be some days where the weather is warm and the sun is out. Some key reminders about how we can work together to ensure your children are safe in the sun:
Children are encouraged to wear protective clothing during the summer term. School uniform is made from fabrics with a close weave, and includes polo shirts, longer style dresses and shorts. PE kit includes the requirement for t-shirts to be worn; no vest style tops are permitted.
Children are encouraged to wear wide-brimmed hats (6-10 cm) that protect their face, neck and ears, when they are outside in hot, sunny weather.
Sunglasses are not to be worn in school due to health and safety restrictions (unless prescribed by an optician)
Sunscreen
Covering up and seeking shade are the most important sun protection measures. In addition, sunscreen can provide protection to exposed skin. However, sunscreen should not be used to increase the amount of time spent in the sun.
Children should apply sunscreen before school starts – SPF 20 or above.
Children may then reapply themselves as appropriate when on or off site for any prolonged outdoor school related activities.
Children may only use their own sunscreen. Parents/Carers are asked to teach their children how to sensibly use and apply these screens and should clearly label them and put them in their child’s bag for their own use. Staff would only apply suncream if absolutely necessary due to time constraints - children are expected to apply sunscreen themselves.
Drinking Water
Children are encouraged to increase their water intake in hot weather and are encouraged to drink water during break times and lunch times.
Every child should bring a labelled, refillable water bottle to school every day.
Year 1 History Workshop
The Year 1 children really enjoyed their History workshop last week. They stepped back into the Stone Age and tried out some of the games and jobs children
would have done 1000 years ago! They found out that children of their age wouldn't be going to school but would be doing jobs for the family like going out to get water and find food. They learned about the food that they would have eaten at the time and how they would make flour - they tried this too!

Year 5 Visit to Doe Bank Park
To support their writing unit on persuasive, formal letters, Y5 visited a local park to explore the advantages and disadvantage for building on the green belt land on Doe Bank Lane. Children received a letter from the Mayor of Walsall stating the proposed plan and have written a persuasive letter from the local residents persuading the council not to build the development plan.
Year 3 History Workshop
Year 3 had a great day when we went back to the Stone Age. Our Stone Age workshop this week was a huge success and the children enjoyed archery where they caught their own dinner and learned about what life was life to live in a Stone Age tribe. They also explored cave paintings and had a go at creating their own on slate boards as well as creating their own Stone Age weapons.

Dinner Money
Please could all parents and carers check their Arbor account and clear any money owing. Dinners should be paid in advance and where debt accumulates we will not be able to continue offering your child a hot dinner at school. If you do have dinner money owing, please contact our School Office to arrange payment.
It may be worth considering whether your child is entitled to free school meals.
Eligibility
Your child may be able to get free school meals if you are in receipt of certain benefits. Please follow this link to Walsall Council's website where you can check eligibility. Free school meals | Walsall Council
You can apply if your child attends school within Walsall borough, whether you live inside or outside the borough. Find out more about how to apply for free school meals.
Sponsored Skip
The total number of skips as a school was over 70,000! Thank you to everyone who supported this event to raise money for sports/playground equipment for the children. We have raised £2,190.00 at the last count. We had some children raising over £150, we had some children who raised £6 and we had some children who donated their pocket money. Every penny counts and we are so grateful to you all.
