We hope that you and your children have had a wonderful summer break, and we would like to warmly welcome everyone back for the start of a new school year. It is lovely to welcome the children back to school and support them as they settle into their new classes and routines.

The autumn term is always an exciting and busy time in Year 5. Building on the learning from Year 4, children will continue to develop their independence, confidence and resilience while taking on new challenges across the curriculum.

This year, we will be using the Oak National Academy curriculum to support and enhance our teaching across Year 5. Oak's carefully sequenced lessons help children build knowledge and skills progressively while making meaningful links across subjects where appropriate. The curriculum is designed to ensure all children receive a broad, balanced and engaging education that meets the expectations of the National Curriculum.

For more information about your child's learning this term, please see our Curriculum Overview.

Reading and Spellings

Year 5 children will bring home a reading band book and a library book of their choice, which they will have the opportunity to change once read. Please read regularly with your child and record any comments on Boom Reader. We ask that children bring their reading books to school every day.

Weekly spellings will be sent home each Friday to practise, with a spelling test taking place the following Thursday. We also encourage all children to read at home at least three times each week to help develop their fluency, comprehension and confidence.

Please can we remind parents and carers that, in line with our school uniform policy, jewellery should not be worn in school except for small stud earrings. For health and safety reasons, earrings must not be worn on PE days. Children will be asked to remove their earrings before PE lessons if they are wearing them. Children should arrive at school dressed in their PE kit on PE days. If children’s hair is below their neckline, they will be required to wear it tied back at all times.

Year 5 PE Days: Outdoor PE - Monday

                    Indoor PE – Tuesday

The children will also have weekly swimming lessons. Please remember all children will need a named swimming costume/trunks, swimming hat and towel please. For safety reasons, NO earrings or watches are allowed.

Morning toast will continue to be available until the close of the register. Children may also bring a healthy piece of fruit from home for their morning snack.

We are proud to offer a wide range of after-school clubs each term. Information about our Autumn Term clubs will be sent out during the first few weeks of term.
