We hope you and your children have had a wonderful summer break, and we would like to warmly welcome everyone back for the start of a new school year.

The autumn term is always an exciting and busy time in Year 1.  Children continue to build on the knowledge, skills and experiences they developed in Reception while becoming more confident and independent learners. For the first four weeks, learning will continue to take place in small groups with opportunities for outdoor learning. We will then gradually move towards a more formal whole-class teaching approach as the children settle into Year 1 routines.

This year, we will be using the Oak National Academy curriculum to support and enhance our teaching across the Year 1 curriculum. Oak's carefully sequenced lessons help children build knowledge and skills progressively while making meaningful links across subjects where appropriate. The curriculum is designed to ensure all children receive a broad, balanced and engaging education that meets the expectations of the National Curriculum.

For more information about your child's learning, please see our Curriculum Overview.

Phonics will continue to be an important part of our daily routine, with plenty of opportunities for children to practise and apply their learning throughout the day. Later in the year, Year 1 children will take part in the national Phonics Screening Check. We will provide further information about this during the spring term.

Reading an Spelling

Children in Year 1 will receive regular homework throughout the year. We encourage all children to read at home at least three times each week to help develop their fluency and confidence.  The children will receive weekly phonics spellings that will be posted on Dojo and tested the following Thursday.

Please can we remind parents and carers that, in line with our school uniform policy, jewellery should not be worn in school except for small stud earrings. For health and safety reasons, earrings must not be worn on PE days.  Children will be asked to remove their earrings before PE lessons if they are wearing them. Children should arrive at school dressed in their PE kit on PE days.

Year 1 PE Days: Outdoor PE - Monday

Indoor PE – Wednesday

The children will also have weekly swimming lessons. Please remember all children will need a named swimming costume/trunks, swimming hat and towel please. For safety reasons, NO earrings or watches are allowed.

We have arranged an off-site educational visit to enrich the children's learning in History, as well as a History workshop. Separate letters with further details about each experience will be sent home shortly.

Morning toast will continue to be available until the close of the register, and children will also be offered a piece of fruit for their morning snack.  A separate letter regarding school milk will be sent out shortly.

We kindly ask that all clothing is clearly labelled with your child's name and class. Please ensure your child brings a named water bottle to school every day. Bottles should contain water only and, where possible, should not be made of metal, as these can be quite heavy for children to carry.

We are proud to offer a wide range of after-school clubs each term. Information about our Autumn Term clubs will be sent out during the first few weeks of term.

Doors will open at 8:40am. Year 1 will enter straight into their classrooms and will be dismissed from there at 3:15pm

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to speak to your child's class teacher, who will be available at the end of each school day.

We are looking forward to a busy, enjoyable and successful autumn term and thank you for your continued support. We look forward to working in partnership with you throughout the year.
